DVD Region 0 PAL. The history of Edinburgh's cinemas told by Filmmaker Ian Rintoul.

In 1929 Edinburgh had more than thirty cinemas, but was eagerly awaiting the opening of yet another one. This time it would be The Playhouse a new Super Cinema seating over 3000 - the largest the city would ever see and the second largest in Scotland. Produced by Edinburgh filmmaker and historian Ian Rintoul, Curtain Up is the story of a wonderful venue that provided some of the most exciting examples of film, theatre and live music ever to be seen in Scotland.

Also featuring The New Palace Theatre, Greenlaw, the new home for the unique Hilsdon Theatre Organ being lovingly restored by the Scottish Theatre Organ Preservation Society. Curtain Up concludes with Laurel and Hardy's 1932 visit to Edinburgh, with Organ accompaniment.

The programme also includes Edinburgh's Silver Screens, an affectionate look at the city and its cinemas in the 1950s, and Matinee Memories, recalling childhood visits to the pictures.
