Synopsis

A Panamint Cinema high-definition restoration from original 35 mm film materials, exclusively available direct from Panamint Cinema.

DVD Region 2 PAL. Venus Peter was chosen for the "Un Certain Regard" showings at the Cannes Film Festival in 1989.

Young Peter’s world is populated with magical thoughts and fantasies, as he grows up with his elderly sage-like grandfather (Ray McAnally), a fisherman, in the Orkney Islands during the 1950s. Peter (Gordon R. Strachan), baptised with sea-water, becomes the sea child of ancient legend, dreaming frequently, often about his absent father. Sometimes he fancies he is a boat, while his grandfather decries the avarice of the human race and rails against the uncontrolled exploitation of the seas which threatens his livelihood. Peter’s experiences are influenced by the poetry readings of his aunt, and the appreciation of beauty taught him by his teacher (Sinéad Cusack).

Venus Peter is based on Christopher Rush’s semi-autobiographical novel A Twelvemonth and a Day, set in St Monan’s, Fife. On scouting the East Neuk village, the fishing industry’s obvious decline led the producers to search for a thriving fishing town, and Stromness in Orkney was finally chosen.

I've only bought one film from you but here's the story.

"I used to travel from York to Aberdeen for University (1987.) To save money I bought a very old 250cc motorbike which was rapidly dying, slow and hard to ride.

I broke the journey at Edinburgh youth hostel and went randomly to a little independent cinema where I saw "Venus Peter". I had no-one to tell about the experience and as time passed I wasn't sure whether I'd really seen an exceptional movie, or was just a bit spaced out from too many hours in the cold.

At turn off the millennium I stayed with a group of friends in a Scottish house on Loch Awe and decided to find the movie to watch. Of course it wasn't available but I contacted the writer/director Peter Sellars (ed. Ian Sellar) who agreed to burn and send me a DVD. It didn't arrive, the moment passed. I figured he'd decided against it and you can't ask multiple times for a favour.

Every couple of years I'd Google for the film, unsuccessfully.

I'm now 54. This year you popped up on my Google search. The film was back in the daylight. I had a wonderful evening, with the right company and a bottle of good red wine. And was thoroughly reassured that my memory wasn't flawed. What a spellbinding piece of art!"

You aren't just selling small independent films, you are preserving treasure. Who looks after those movies if you do not? Where will they live? How will they be taken out of the dark? (Not just rhetorical questions. If you have answers to them I'd be interested.)
