A thrilling adventure set in untamed Oregon Territory in 1856, Tourneur’s portrayal of settlers in the mining town of Jacksonville is undoubtedly one of the most vivid portrayals of pioneer life in the Old West ever brought to the screen.
Logan Stuart (Dana Andrews) faces the challenges of business, a likeable but feckless gambling friend (Brian Donlevy) whose transgressions are leading him to the gallows, and two lovely women (Susan Hayward and Patricia Roc) fighting for the attention of the most eligible bachelor in town. Equally at home in this fast-paced story are the amiable Andy Devine and villain Ward Bond.
All this set in splendid scenery and photographed in Technicolor by one of Hollywood’s finest cinematographers, Edward Cronjager. Canyon Passage is briskly directed by Tourneur, taking a step away from gothic horror films such as Cat People and I Walked with a Zombie, and engaging with the colourful settings of this exciting tale of drama and romance.
