"Venus Peter" (Ian Sellar, 1989) is based on Christopher Rush's semi-autobiographical novel "A Twelvemonth and a Day", describing his childhood in the fishing village of St Monans.
The producers originally intended to shoot the film in St Monans, but the village had lost much of its maritime heritage. Director Ian Sellar wrote "With industry gone the place had been tidied up in a National Trust kind of way. Not only did we find ourselves in Orkney, one of the most remarkable places on earth, but in Stromness, a town that still lived by its harbour and where boats were still part of the culture. Immediately we felt welcomed."
And so this beautiful film which reflects so much of Scotland's maritime and island culture was born in Orkney.
